As regards the 4th
paragraph of your letter, I beg respectfully to observe, that on referring
to the Estimates now before
the Council it would appear that instead of drawing the 4th highest salary after the Governor if
allowances are taken
into account, the Surveyor General ranks 7th in
point of salary. It is my
desire to avoid
invidious comparisons, but I think it will be
admitted by those practically
acquainted with the work and responsibility
devolving on the Surveyor
General, that his relative
position and emoluments
are not overrated.
